Church Hat Lady

OK, first let me apologize for being absent for so long! Things have been a bit hectic but it's all good. We officially moved into a new space and I love it. As I write this I'm looking out the window at a busy street, people waiting for the train, and a beautiful city skyline. It's not NYC, but not half bad! We are still unpacking and getting things set up just the way we want it but I wanted to take a few minutes to update you all.

With all this moving, unpacking, and uncertainty there have been sleepless nights and stressful days. When we thought about opening this store we wanted our true love for helping others to shine through. Yes, of course, we love fashion but we are also passionate about contributing to deserving non profits. If you aren't familiar with our business, Traverse Consignment, we are an upscale consignment store and a portion of all of our proceeds goes towards a local non profit.

I fully admit sometimes the clothes and shoes outshine our main purpose but I also know without selling these items we can't give to these organizations. When guilt of not giving enough attention to these charities sets in I try to reflect on what we are trying to accomplish. I am reminded of a recent trip I took to Wal-Mart a few months ago. I didn't think such a short trip to my personal hell would stay with me but it has.

There are sometimes when no other place has exactly what you need and that little demon voice in your head keeps repeating "Wal Mart has it. Wal Mart has it.". You try to shut it up by going to Rite Aid but it just won't quit. Finally you give in and the next thing you know you are in the parking lot praying for a quick, painless trip.

Luckily my husband was with me to hold my hand but I was still hoping to blink and be back home. We entered through the exit doors as my husband usually finds this amusing. As I began rushing to the aisle we needed I noticed an elderly woman in casual wear but my eyes were drawn to her hat that we Southerners know as a "church hat". It was Saturday so I thought she was just excited for church the next day. I watched her glide effortlessly through the produce section but every few steps she would stop and talk to someone with such excitement. Each person she spoke with seemed surprised and after a few seconds their faces lit up with a smile and they replied with what seemed to be a "thank you". I couldn't quite make out what she was saying but just assumed she knew all these folks and she was making the rounds. As we continued to rush from aisle to aisle gathering our things I kept seeing this woman and then my curiosity kicked in and I just had to know what she was doing. As I caught up with her in the toiletries aisle she eyed a middle aged woman and waltzed over to her. Without hesitation "Church Hat Lady" made eye contact with this other woman and it was  evident they were strangers. But with a sweet, soft voice C.H.L. told this woman how much she loved her sweater and how beautiful she was. With her mouth wide open from surprise and gratefulness the younger woman replied "thank you" and then C.H.L. kept moving.

So, this is what she was doing. Not paying much attention to my list anymore, I was intrigued by C.H.L. so I began following her around Wal Mart (in a non-stalker way of course). She made it look so easy and quite pleasant. There wasn't a lot of fuss involved in her approach and it was incredibly genuine. Each person she greeted she found one thing to compliment them on and she left them as quickly as she found them. And as she pushed her cart away the smile on her face was one of happiness and also satisfaction that she had made someone else happy. Even if it were just for a few seconds, she altered their day in a positive way.

As I begin to feel stressed or tension when it comes to this business I remember Church Hat Lady and realize why we started this business. We work hard so we can contribute a little that can possibly alter someones life in a positive way.  I encourage you to take a moment and channel C.H.L. today. You may not realize it or ever know it but you could make a positive change in someones life today.

Peace, Love, and Compliments,

Traverse Girl

I Don't Think You're Ready For This Jelly

Calling all children of the 80's who rocked their jellies with pride! I have always stated my love for my jellies and that has never faded. I knew they would make a come back....and now they have! You know my love for shoes and that definitely includes jellies. I wore them in the summer, when it was raining and I tried to convince my Mother that nothing was cooler than breaking out the jelly shoes in the snow.

I could never quite tell if my dedication to these plastic gems included the color, the flexibility or the ability to secure rocks in the bottom to add to your collection. All around this just seemed to be the perfect shoe. You could wear them with shorts and a t-shirt and then turn around and wear the same ones, with a dress, to your crushes 9th birthday party. Jelly shoes were always there for you and now it's our turn to be there for them. Countless designers from Gucci to Sketchers have reinvented this timeless shoe so check them out!

Say It Ain't So

Rich Maloof, from the Daily Dose blog, wrote about a study done on women (ages 18 to 64) and it was discovered that 9 out of 10 women don't find themselves attractive. This is an astonishing number, but unfortunately it's not hard to believe.

I fall victim to self-scrutiny more days than I would like to admit. But why? I have an incredibly supportive husband who loves me just the way I am. For the most part, I surround myself with other women who are confident and therefore, give me the boost I need. My family will allow me to be seen at functions even if I'm wearing a garbage bag. (Although,  I firmly believe as long as you show up with a bottle of wine they will let most anyone attend.)

So if we have the support from those who are nearest and dearest to us then why are we so hard on ourselves?  Personal truth: The days when I am not satisfied with my personal growth is when I stand in front of the mirror and begin to invite myself to the pity party. I internally pick apart everything negative about myself and concoct a list of the 72 different things I want to change. Unfortunately, those revisions usually require time, money and a quick trip to luxurious island. Due to the lack of time and money it would take to transform myself into a Victoria's Secret model, I have to come up with a quick pep talk to get me back on track. A pep talk plus a phone call to my sister, my Mom or a true friend is usually what I need to pull me out of my funk. But, I must know....am I alone on this one??

Peace, love, and beauty,

Kissed By The Sun

OK, I fully admit that I used to spend countless hours in the tanning bed desperately seeking that special glow for the summer. Because I'm from a small town most tanning beds are in salons, or as I found out my senior year in high school, they can be located in a tool shed. Yes, a tool shed. I paid a friend who assured me she would pay the homeowner, whom she knew. She then told me where the secret key was hidden for entry into the "tanning shed". After school I quickly rushed to this random persons house and searched under the deck for the hidden key. The golden key unlocked a world I knew nothing about and I was disappointed in myself that it had taken me 17 years to discover tanning beds could be hidden in small wooden barns that also housed a lawnmower. Each day I visited this wonderland my skin obtained the tan I was longing for. I was forever hooked on tanning beds, or so I thought.

Being raised just two hours from the beach, most of my summers were spent riding the waves, building sandcastles and playing catch with a beach ball. My Mother forced us to wear sunscreen before we went swimming in the ocean and then it was mandatory to reapply after a few hours in the sun. And you know how horrible that was. The combination of salt water, sand and sunscreen makes me squirm just thinking about it!

30 years ago the scare for skin cancer didn't ring constantly in our ears like it does today.  When my Mother had a melanoma scare almost 10 years ago I began to realize I could be next.  Mixing the trips to the tanning bed plus the lack of sunscreen and countless hours on the beach had to stop. But how was I going to glow from now on???

The are two words that most of us either dread or love.....self tanner. I have spent several years not only searching for a great self tanner but trying to figure out how the heck to put it on. Through many trials and errors that consisted of streaks, blotches and orange patches I finally found my perfect match. Three summers ago I reluctantly purchased L'Oreal Paris Sublime Glow (purchase info below). It's a daily moisturizer plus a skin tone enhancer. After the first application I was sold. It's so easy to put on and it leaves a shimmer that I have not grown tired of. Just like any self tanner you need to exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate before applying. After I exfoliate I usually put on my regular body lotion. The Sublime Glow claims to moisturize but I haven't found, in my case, for that to be entirely true. After I apply the self tanner immediately wash your hands. This self tanner doesn't tend to leave blotches but it can leave that "dirty hands" look that I'm certain you don't want.

Hopefully you will reconsider your time in the tanning bed and use a self tanner to create your "kissed by the sun" look.

Peace, Love, and Glow

CORAL ME BAD

Just got a great pedi and went for coral in honor of my love for Spring and this color! Coral is popping up everywhere and I smile every time I see it. We can thank Kate for rocking those awesome coral skinny jeans when she went to visit the Great Britain hockey teams.  Even if this is the most casual we've seen her, she still seems to have put a royal touch on coral!

Fiona Lambert, a brand director for Asda's George clothing line, projects the trend will continue to soar, telling the Mirror: “Wearing bright colours lifts us all and now we have the royal seal of approval for coloured denim from Kate Middleton, we know this is going to be the hot trend this summer.”

If you have a few extra bucks you can snag these J. Brand jeans for $169. But hurry...sales are soaring and most department stores have already sold out!!

Peace, love, and coral,

Take A Chance On Me

Do you have that vintage necklace from your Grandmother or killer shoes you are dying to wear? Then do it! The majority of the time I am the most dressed up out of my friends when we go out. Why? Usually it's because I have a new outfit I'm itching to wear and I truly love how dressing up makes me feel. Everyone doesn't understand why Kim Kardashian wears 5 inch Christian Louboutins to the grocery store but I do! Ok, I can't say I've rocked heels just to purchase some grapes and milk but I have been tempted to.

We recently had a girls night at my friends house that was supposed to consist of a bowl of chili and a viewing of the new Twilight movie. When I entered Jill's apartment she was dressed up and my eyes immediately went to her brand new Steve Madden booties she purchased days before from www.traverseconsignment.com. I loved her outfit and admired the risk she took by being the most dressed up out of all of us. Although we were just in her home, she waltzed around her place with such confidence I almost asked if I could put on her shoes for a while.

It may be a pair of shoes, headband or coat that you are wanting to take a risk with. Ask a friend's opinion but trust your own! I found this Tolani scarf on www.traverseconsignment.com that would look great with a pair of jeans, solid shirt and sandals. Let this scarf standout and wear it like you love it!

Peace, love, and taking chances,

Traverse Girl Is Created

When I was 5 years old, I begged my Mom for a pair of Sam and Libby ballet flats with a bow on the front. While my friends were asking for Barbies and My Little Ponies my love was (and still is) for shoes. My Mother quickly realized that she was in for quite a life with me that was full of playing dress up, make up, the need for a new outfit when the new school year rolled around and a senior paper that was based on the history of shoes.

It is my hope that this blog will portray my love for fashion, shopping on a budget and much more!

                        Peace, love, and great shoes,
